Procedures and Guidelines for Individuals

How do I obtain my initial NTA certification?
There are 4 steps to certification application. A checklist is attached to the Certification Information Form for your assistance.

1. Maintain current NTA membership.
2. Complete the certification information form.
3. Attach required documentation as noted on the application checklist.*
4. Complete background check forms and fees as directed on the certification application*
5. Enclose the appropriate fees (check, money order, or purchase order).

*Individuals participating via a Learning Center Affiliate will have this information submitted for them.

Please remember . . .

1. The certification process will not begin without payment.
2. Certification fees do not include NTA annual membership.
3. Certification and membership cannot be processed concurrently.
4. The NTA does not accept credit cards or department purchase cards.

How do I obtain NTA certification as an Academic Coach?

Individuals seeking certification as Academic Coaches should follow instructions and procedures outlined specifically for this certification. Please note that you must complete Tutor Certification at the Level I -- Advanced as a prerequisite to certification as an Academic Coach.

How do I earn certification as a program director or tutorial administrator?

We recognize that as a tutorial administrator, director, or program coordinator, you may not be a direct tutorial practitioner. As such, applicants for certification as an administrator/director must fulfill the following requirements:

We recognize that as a tutorial administrator, director, or program coordinator, you may not be a direct tutorial practitioner. As such, applicants for certification as an administrator/director must fulfill the following requirements:

    1. Bachelor's Degree earned.
    2. A minimum of one year experience as an educational program administrator, director or coordinator.
    3. A minimum of 6 months as a tutorial program administrator, director or coordinator.
    4. NTA Member in good standing
    5. In addition to completion of the NTA developed and approved “Tutoring Foundations” course provided by Crossroads of Learning.
    6. 50 hours of structured administrative training via workshops and conferences with an NTA certified tutor trainer or supervisor. 
    7. Supporting documentation as indicated on the certification application and checklist.



PREREQUISITES FOR INDIVIDUAL CERTIFICATION:

 

 

LEVEL I

Basic

 

 

  1. Minimum of 50 hours tutorial experience.
  2. NTA membership in good standing.
  3. Competency proven through one of the following:

a)       A minimum of 10 hours of structured tutor training via workshops and conferences with an NTA certified tutor trainer or supervisor, or

b)       Completion of the Basic module of the NTA developed and approved “Tutoring Foundations” course provided by Crossroads of Learning exclusively to Learning Center Affiliates, or

c)       Knowledge and skills testing.

LEVEL I

 
Intermediate

 

  1. Minimum of 75 hours tutorial experience
  2. NTA membership in good standing
  3. Competency proven through one of the following:

a)       Completion of the Intermediate module of the NTA developed and approved “Tutoring Foundations” course provided by Crossroads of Learning exclusively to Learning Center Affiliates, or

b)       Knowledge and skills testing.

LEVEL I

Advanced

 

  1. A Minimum of 100 hours of tutorial experience
  2. NTA Membership in good standing
  3. Competency proven through one of the following:

a)       Completion of the Basic module of the NTA developed and approved “Tutoring Foundations” course provided by Crossroads of Learning exclusively to Learning Center Affiliates, or

b)       Knowledge and skills testing.

  1. Supporting documentation as indicated on the certification application and checklist.

 

 

 

LEVEL II

Basic

 

  1. Bachelor's degree earned or currently enrolled with a minimum of 60 hours completed.
  2. 100 hours tutorial experience.
  3. Presented an informational session at a minimum of one tutorial or educational conference (may be local, regional, or national).
  4. NTA membership in good standing.
  5. In addition to completion of the NTA developed and approved “Tutoring Foundations” course provided by Crossroads of Learning, or competency proven through knowledge and skills testing, a minimum of 25 hours of structured tutor training via workshops and conferences with an NTA certified tutor trainer or supervisor.
  6. Supporting documentation as indicated on the certification application and checklist.

 

 

LEVEL II:
Advanced

(Para-Trainer)

 

  1. Bachelor's degree earned or currently enrolled with a minimum of 60 hours completed.
  2. 125 hours tutorial experience.
  3. Assisted with a minimum of three tutor trainings on local campus.
  4. Presented an informational session at a minimum of one tutorial or educational conference (may be local, regional, or national).
  5. NTA membership in good standing.
  6. In addition to completion of the NTA developed and approved “Tutoring Foundations” course provided by Crossroads of Learning, or competency proven through knowledge and skills testing, a minimum of 25 hours of structured tutor training via workshops and conferences with an NTA certified tutor trainer or supervisor.
  7. Supporting documentation as indicated on the certification application and checklist

 

 

 

 

Level III Basic

(Professionals)

 

  1. Bachelor’s degree earned.
  2. 150 hours of tutorial experience.
  3. NTA Member in good standing
  4. Presented a research or training session at a minimum of two regional or national tutorial or developmental educational conferences.
  5. Published one article in the NTA Newsletter or other recognized educational forum.
  6. In addition to completion of the NTA developed and approved “Tutoring Foundations” course provided by Crossroads of Learning, or competency proven through knowledge and skills testing, a minimum of 35 hours of structured tutor training via workshops and conferences with an NTA certified tutor trainer or supervisor. This includes 10 hours spent working on an individual project as described below.
  7. Supporting documentation as indicated on the certification application and checklist

 

 

 

 

LEVEL III Advanced (Administrators)

 

  1. Bachelor’s degree earned.
  2. NTA Member in good standing
  3. Presented a research or training session at a minimum of two regional or national tutorial or developmental educational conferences.
  4. Published one article in the NTA Newsletter or other recognized educational forum.
  5. In addition to completion of the NTA developed and approved “Tutoring Foundations” course provided by Crossroads of Learning, or competency proven through knowledge and skills testing, a minimum of 50 hours of structured tutor training via workshops and conferences with an NTA certified tutor trainer or supervisor. This includes 10 hours spent working on an individual project as described below.
  6. Supporting documentation as indicated on the certification application and checklist.
  7. A minimum of one year experience as an educational program administrator, director or coordinator.
  8. A minimum of 6 months as a tutorial program administrator, director or coordinator.

 

 

 

LEVEL III Master

(Trainers)

 

  1. Bachelor’s degree earned (Master’s degree preferred)
  2. NTA Member in good standing
  3. Presented a research or “hot topics” session at a minimum of two regional or national tutorial or developmental educational conferences.
  4. Published one article in the NTA Newsletter or other recognized educational forum.
  5. In addition to completion of the NTA developed and approved “Tutoring Foundations” course provided by Crossroads of Learning, or competency proven through knowledge and skills testing, a minimum of 75 hours of structured tutor training via workshops and conferences with an NTA certified tutor trainer or supervisor. This includes 10 hours spent working on an individual project as described below and 15 hours of workshops specifically designated for tutor trainers.
  6. Supporting documentation as indicated on the certification application and checklist.
  7. A minimum of two years experience as an educational program administrator, director or coordinator.
  8. A minimum of one year as a tutorial program administrator, director or coordinator.
  9. Documented previous experience facilitating workshops, seminars or other professional trainings.

 

 

 

 



INDIVIDUAL PROJECT REQUIREMENTS:
Certification candidates at all phases Level III must complete 10 individual project hours. These projects are to be designed by the applicant and must be approved before completing the certification application. All projects must be approved by the NTA Certification Committee.

MAINTAINING INDIVIDUAL CERTIFICATION

How do I renew my NTA certification? Your NTA certification must be renewed each year. There are 4 steps to certification renewal.

  1. Maintain current NTA membership.
  2. Complete a renewal application.
  3. Complete the required amount of Continuing Certification Units (CCU's) as required for your level of certification.
  4. Attach required documentation and fees as noted on the application checklist.

How many CCU's do I need? The number of CCU's needed for certification renewal depends on the level of renewal you are seeking.

  1. Level I Basic Certification Renewals require 3 CCU's.
  2. Level I Advanced Certification Renewals require 5 CCU's.
  3. Level II Basic Certification Renewals require 7 CCU's.
  4. Level II Advanced Certification Renewals require 9 CCU’s.
  5. Level III Basic Certification Renewals require 12 CCU's.
  6. Level III Advanced Certification Renewals require 15 CCU's.
  7. Level III Master Certification Renewals require 18 CCU's.

How do I earn CONTINUING CERTIFICATION UNITS? Continuing Certification Units (CCU's) toward certification renewal may be earned in a variety of ways:

  1. Attend the NTA Annual Conference (9 CCU's).
  2. Attend local, regional or national workshops, seminars, and conferences focusing on tutorial assistance, developmental education, or literacy programs (1-3 CCU's).
  3. Successfully complete a web based NTA subject specific seminar (3 CCU's).
  4. Successfully complete a web based NTA tutor training course (6-9 CCU's).
  5. Successfully complete a face-to-face NTA tutor training course (6-9 CCU's).
  6. Present at local, regional or national workshops, seminars and conferences focusing on tutorial assistance, developmental education, or literacy programs (2 CCU's).
  7. Successfully complete a graduate course at an accredited postsecondary institution (3 credit bearing minimum) focusing on tutorial assistance, developmental education, or literacy programs (3 CCU's).
  8. Successfully complete for credit projects and/or directed independent studies at an accredited postsecondary institution focusing on tutorial assistance, developmental education, or literacy programs (3 CCU's).
  9. Document community service or volunteerism for tutorial assistance, developmental education, or literacy programs (up to 5 CCU's).
  10. Publish major articles and/or contribute chapters to research works focusing on tutorial assistance, developmental education, or literacy programs (5 CCU's).
  11. Successfully complete individual tutorial projects and research as conceived by the certification applicant and approved by the NTA Certification Committee (1-15CCU's).
